Goals for Campers

Camp is a powerful experience that can strengthen the values that parents are teaching daily. Whether it’s through arts & crafts or swimming, field trips, sports or adventure activities, Y camps have allowed kids to be kids and stay safe during school breaks for the summer and holidays.

Every summer, YMCA Camp Twin Lakes has the opportunity and the responsibility to provide a unique outdoor experience for over 2,000 children.  During this one week adventure, there are several goals and desired outcomes for each participant.

Goals for Campers:

  • Grow in the 5 Core Values of Caring, Honest, Respect, Responsibility & Faith.

Campers will be faced with challenges throughout the week and they will have the opportunity to display the 5 core values.  During the program debriefs and cabin chats, there will be focused discussions on the importance of these character traits.  Verbal recognition will be made when campers display one of these values, so others can recognize their growth in this area.

  • Grow in the Ability to Make Good, Independent Decisions.

For many campers, this will be their first time away from home.  Most children are very limited in their ability to make their own decisions, as their parents, teachers and coaches do most of the decision making.  During their week at camp, participants will make decisions about their schedule, their involvement in keeping a clean cabin, when to take a shower and what to eat.  We have an amazing opportunity to guide their decision making process and give them tools to make good decisions.

  • Create Life-Long Friendships.

Camp presents a wonderful opportunity to create new friendships that can last a life time.  Camp staff must be intentional in creating friend-making activities and times throughout the week.

  • Gain/Grow an Appreciation for Nature & the Out-of-Doors.

Campers will live in the outdoors and nature for one week.  During this time, they will participate in programs such as nature, hiking, swimming and astronomy in the outdoors.  Each of these program guides will have an opportunity to whet the appetite of campers, and give them a chance to explore further.

Every summer, over 2,000 children have the chance to experience a unique, one-week adventure at YMCA Camp Twin Lakes. During their stay, we’ll help them achieve the following goals:

Grow in the Y’s five core values of caring, honesty, respect, responsibility and faith

Throughout the week, kids will face a number of challenges designed to help develop their character. We’ll provide positive feedback and reinforcement each time a camper displays one of these values, helping the camp as a whole learn and grow.

Learn to make good decisions

Every day, kids will have the chance to make choices regarding their schedule, activities, meals, hygiene and more. We’ll help them act independently and give them tools to continue making good decisions after camp ends.

Create lifelong friendships

Camp Twin Lakes is a safe environment where kids can build self-esteem, develop interpersonal skills and make lasting friendships and memories.

Develop an appreciation for nature

Hiking, swimming, kayaking, fishing, star-gazing, team sports — the number of outdoor experiences your camper will be exposed to is almost limitless.

“At Camp Twin Lakes, we’ll provide the support, guidance and resources our campers need to achieve greater health and well-being for their mind, body and spirit.”
